Support & FAQ

How to open, use, and troubleshoot Palim on iPhone, iPad, Android and Chrome (Chrome 116 or later on desktop; iOS / iPadOS 16 or later; Android 7.0 or later).

How do I open Palim?

iPhone, iPad, Android: tap the Palim icon. The first time, a Welcome guide shows the basics; reopen it any time from Settings → Welcome & Tips.

Chrome:

  1. Click the Palim icon in the Chrome toolbar. To keep it there, pin it from the puzzle-piece menu.
  2. Or press Alt+Shift+P from anywhere in Chrome.
  3. Palim opens in its own tab. Clicking the icon again takes you back to that tab.

You can change the shortcut at chrome://extensions/shortcuts.

Notes and saving

Do I need to save?

No. Notes save automatically a moment after you stop typing, and Ctrl/Cmd+S saves immediately. The status bar shows Saved, Saving… or Not saved.

Where are my notes stored?

Chrome: only in your browser on this computer, in the extension’s storage. They are never uploaded.

Apps: in the app’s private storage on your device, and in your own iCloud Backup or Google Backup when your device’s backup is on. Palim itself never uploads anything.

Can I sync notes between devices?

Not at the moment. To move notes, open Settings → Export All Notes…: it saves every note in one ZIP file, in folders like yours. On the other device, import that file (Chrome: Ctrl/Cmd+O or drag it into Palim; apps: the Import button in the sidebar) and your notes come back in their folders.

I got a new phone. Will my notes come back?

Yes, when you set up the new phone from your iCloud Backup (iPhone, iPad) or Google Backup (Android) and your backup was on. Notes and settings are part of the device’s backup.

Can I keep Palim out of my iCloud Backup?

Yes: on iPhone or iPad, Settings → your name → iCloud → Storage (or Manage Account Storage) → Backups → this device, then switch Palim off. Your notes are then not restored with a new device, so use Export All Notes.

What happens if I remove the extension or the app?

Its notes are deleted with it: Chrome deletes an extension’s data, and iOS deletes an app’s data. On Android, reinstalling may bring back the last backup. Export anything you want to keep first.

I deleted a note by mistake.

Click Undo in the message that appears, or open Trash at the bottom of the sidebar and choose Restore. Notes stay in the Trash for 30 days.

On a phone, the Trash is at the bottom of the sidebar: tap the sidebar button at the top left to open it.

Opening files from other apps

How do I open a file in Palim?

iPhone and iPad: in Files, touch and hold the file → Open With → Palim, or Share → Palim from any app.

Android: Open with → Palim, or Share → Palim.

The file becomes a new note.

Which files can Palim open?

Text, Markdown, JSON, YAML, XML, code in the 18 languages, and the ZIP made by Export All Notes. Files up to 10 MB, ZIP files up to 50 MB.

Does Palim change my original file?

No. It reads only what you send it and keeps its own copy as a note. The original stays where it was, unchanged.

Why was my file refused?

It isn’t text (a video or an image, for example) or it’s over the size limit. The message names the file.

Can I share text instead of a file?

On Android, yes: share selected text to Palim and it becomes a new note. On iPhone and iPad, copy and paste it.

Writing

How do I organise notes?

Folders: use the New Folder button at the top of the sidebar, and drag notes into folders. On a touch screen, hold a note for a moment, then drag.

Pins: pin a note from its ⋯ menu → Pin.

Search: search every note with the search field at the top of the sidebar (Chrome: Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+F).

How do I present?

Press ▶︎ Present in the toolbar (on a phone, in the ⋯ menu) to play the note’s folder as slides. In Markdown, a --- line starts the next slide. Swipe or use the arrow keys; Esc or ✕ ends it.

While presenting, the toolbar at the top changes the text size, the slide width and the theme of the slides; Palim remembers them. Keys: + / - text size, 0 reset, Esc exit.

How do I draw a diagram?

In a Markdown note, write a fenced code block that starts with ```mermaid, then open Preview or Split. If the diagram has a mistake, Palim shows Diagram error with the reason above your text.

Syntax guide: mermaid.js.org.

Which languages are highlighted?

JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, CSS, JSON, Python, Java, Kotlin, Swift, C, C++, C#, Go, Rust, Shell, SQL, YAML and XML.

Palim usually recognises code and Markdown when you paste it into a new note. To change it, use the language button in the toolbar or the language name in the status bar.

Apps

What is the bar above the keyboard?

The keyboard bar: Undo, Redo, Tab and Shift+Tab, arrows, and the symbols code and Markdown need. The key at its right end hides the keyboard.

Troubleshooting

It says “Palim is open in another tab”. (Chrome)

Only one Palim tab edits at a time, so tabs can’t overwrite each other. Click Use Palim here to move editing to the current tab; the other tab saves first.

The status bar says “Not saved”.

Your text is still safe while Palim stays open, and it keeps retrying. Usually the device is out of storage: free up some space and keep Palim open until it says Saved. If it persists, export the note and contact me.

Does Palim work offline?

Yes, completely.
